Who should do this course?

The Early Childhood Development Practitioner Course is designed for anyone who has a passion for working with young children and who wants to build a strong foundation in Early Childhood Development. It is designed for:

  • Aspiring ECD practitioners who want to start a meaningful career in early learning centres, preschools, or home-based childcare.
  • Current ECD educators and assistants who wish to upgrade their skills, deepen their understanding of child development, and gain practical, up-to-date training.
  • Community workers, volunteers, and childminders who support young children in informal or community settings and would benefit from structured ECD knowledge.
  • Anyone passionate about early education and looking to make a positive impact during the most critical years of a child’s development.

Whether you’re just starting out or looking to formalise and strengthen your skills, this course will equip you with the knowledge, confidence, practical tools, and workplace experience to nurture young children with competence and care.

Do I qualify for this course?

Minimum requirements: There are no prior learning or skills required to enrol in this course. However, students must be able to understand, speak, read, and write in English at a secondary school level to successfully engage with the course content. Prospective students will participate in admission assessments aimed at ensuring the most suitable course is selected for each student.

Students must be available to attend classroom sessions once a week in person, and if not currently employed at a daycare or educare centre, will need to be available to conduct the workplace experience requirements at a designated educare centre.

Course details

Duration: 37 weeks comprising of:

  • 30 weeks (114 days) of Knowledge and Practical Modules
  • 30 weeks (114 days) of Workplace Modules
  • 15 Months to complete the Programme

Knowledge content

  • Plan and prepare inclusive activities to support the holistic development and well-being of children,
  • Facilitate and mediate appropriate holistic learning of every child,
  • Observe, assess and record each child’s progress according to the age and stage.
  • Develop reports of children’s development and learning.
  • Promote the well-being, health, safety and protection of children.

Training Material

Each participant will receive a Learner Guide and Learner Workbook. 

Assessment

Clearly defined outcomes will be assessed continuously with a final assessment. A final External Integrated Summative Assessment (EISA) will be scheduled at the end of the course program.

Group sizes

Maximum of 10 learners per class to ensure individual opportunities and attention.

This is an accredited course and Learners will receive an Occupational Certificate: Early Childhood Development Practitioner (NQF 4)
